National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
When was your last Mammogram? Do you need to be tested! What steps should you take to cut the risks? Perhaps we should review some of the causes of cancer. You could be next!
Updates from John Hopkins tells us that every person has cancer cells in their body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person’s lifetime. If you have cancer it means you have multiple nutritional deficiencies; could be to environment, food, genetic, or lifestyle factors. You need to change your diet, and add supplements that will strengthen the immune system. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.
What do cancer cells feed on- Sugar is a cancer feeder. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. Milk causes the body to produce mucus. Cancer feeds on mucus. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. You should eat fish, chicken as meat –based died is acidic. A diet of Fresh vegetables, whole grains, seeds and nuts help put the body into an alkaline environment. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer –fighting properties.
Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit! Positive attitude will help the cancer patient be a survivor. Learn to relax and enjoy life! Remember cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment.
There is no proven link between breast cancer and household products, such as plastic bottles or chemicals from your cleaning products. A variety of these goods contain hormone disruptors, chemicals that when absorbed into the body can mimic or interfere with hormones such as estrogen. Some researchers believe that chemicals with estrogenic characteristics can cause normal breast cells to divide, which may lead to increased breast cancer risk. Individual products contain only small amounts of questionable chemicals such as agents in cosmetics, household products; some plastic will cause breast cancer.
With prevention in mind here are ways we can reduce the risk of developing cancer: Avoid tobacco products and second-hand smoke, achieve and maintain healthy weight, exercise at least 30-40 minutes a day several times a week. Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains (Fresh is the Best}, limit alcohol intake, be aware and protect yourself from ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Reduce your everyday exposure to potentially-toxic environmental chemicals in the home, know your family history and get screened and choose your dietary supplements wisely.

AIRPORT TERMINAL PROJECT TO BEGIN SOON
Project Could Start by Mid-June

The Pocatello Regional Airport will soon receive a much needed face lift. The airport has opened bids for the Terminal Expansion and Renovation project, and Airport Manager David Allen says he needs to secure the final grant for stimulus funds before he can award the contract.

The airport owned and operated by the City of Pocatello, opened bids for the project April 28. Allen said now that the City has a qualified bid he can apply for stimulus funds already designated to the project under an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant. The FAA is administering ARRA funds under the existing Airport Improvement Program (AIP). One of several deviations for stimulus funds from regular program requirements is that bids must be opened before the FAA can issue a grant offer.

"We have all the other AIP grants in place, but unlike normal FAA grants the stimulus grant is based on the actual bid, not an estimate," Allen said. According to FAA documents the FAA has designated up to $4.5 million in ARRA funds for the terminal project, but Allen does not believe he will receive that much. "I expect the FAA to specify $2.25 million in the ARRA grant offer because we have other grant funds that will cover the remaining cost of the project," Allen said.

The apparent low bidder for the project is Stock Construction Management, based in Boise, with a bid of $3,194,857 total for the base project and all ten add-alternates. Allen hopes to issue a Notice to Proceed to the contractor in the first half of June with substantial completion in about nine months.

Allen says the ARRA grant program couldn't have come at a better time. "This project was already behind schedule and looked like it would consume three more years of project funding. We had to borrow money to build now or face escalating prices and the risk of losing some grants we already had secured. It was incredibly frustrating to say the least," Allen said.

The project will replace the existing, T-shaped building that houses the passenger screening checkpoint, sterile waiting area and gates. The new building will be a trapezoid-shaped structure with a central waiting area, a gate at each corner, restrooms and other amenities. "The restrooms are vitally important," Allen said, adding, "In this era of heightened aviation security it is necessary to offer our passengers pre-boarding restrooms within the sterile area."

Another major design improvement will be the relocation of the TSA baggage screening facility and integration of screening into the baggage check-in process. "Currently passengers check in at the airline counter, have their checked luggage tagged, and then carry their own checked luggage across the lobby to the TSA baggage screening facility," Allen said. "The new design allows the customer one-stop convenience at the airline counter and the rest is handled internally 'behind the wall'. This streamlined process vastly improves our customer convenience and enhances the passenger's overall experience."

The project also provides for the renovation of the main terminal building, including the existing restrooms, and the installation of a cover over the walkway leading from the new vehicle parking facility. Allen said a major resurfacing of the aircraft parking ramp in front of the gates will be necessary to match the grade of the new building, and that the airport took advantage of this pavement work to add an aircraft de-icing pad and collection tank. "It's not required, at least not yet, but it's the right thing to do from an environmental standpoint so we seized the opportunity," Allen said.

"The terminal project is the final phase of facility improvements necessary for presenting a modern, professional image to our customers. Coupled with our fast, friendly and convenient service, value-added products such as free wi-fi and complimentary coffee, and competitive fares to worldwide destinations, we expect to start building our market share and then leveraging that gain to acquire new and improved air service options." Pocatello Regional Airport - closer to home, closer to you.
