Presidents Letter Sept. of 08 written - 1 September, 2008

President’s Message

Butch Hulse

It’s September and the fair is in town and summer is coming to an end. I have enjoyed this past summer, for me it didn’t get to hot. Paula and my garden have been producing a lot of veggies. I have to admit Paula has done more work on it than I have, except for the eating part and I have been a lot of help in that department.

Blackfoot at Dusk has had another successful season with great music, nice weather and lots of people. Thank you to Bingham Memorial Hospital for sponsoring this year’s Blackfoot at Dusk. Their support was greatly appreciated. Thank you to the musicians that played for us, you did a great job and to the city for keeping the park looking so nice. We appreciated that the trains didn’t blow their whistles as much as in past years.

Our Chamber luncheon this month featured our Congressman Mike Simpson who spoke on what congress is doing, which in his words was not much. Politicians are supposed to be leaders with a vision of the future for the good of the people. So not making decisions on energy and social security is bad for all of us, but the positive side is Congressman Simpson is trying to rectify this.

So while I’m on the subject of politics, here’s some food for thought for our local legislatures who will be going back to work soon. I think a couple of good items to bring up on the floor are:

1. Why not drug test anyone receiving financial aid, most work places now require their workers to take a test to prove they are drug free.

2. Drivers who receive more than one ticket for driving without privileges should be mandatory that their vehicle be impounded. This should also take care of some of the drivers without insurance. This is working for some states so why not in Idaho?

I understand we are having write-in candidates in the general election in November. Normally in Bingham County our political leaders are selected in the primary election, so this will be interesting to see how it turns out. It’s harder to win as a write in but two candidates feel they can do it. I’ll see all of you at the polls in November. Remember if you don’t vote, don’t complain.

The Chamber of Commerce golf tournament was a success even with 30 mile an hour winds. We had a lunch of BBQ hamburgers with all the fixins and many fine gifts were donated by local businesses. The one trophy given out was for the highest score. I heard the recipients say it was a trophy of integrity for keeping a true score.

Here’s a quote for the month by Helen Keller: “One can never consent to creep when one feels an impulse to soar.”

So until next month, stay cool.
